Gripping the faded January 17, 1920 edition of the Chicago Tribune which declared the advent of Prohibition, Historia knew his destiny was sealed - he had to become the city's top bootlegger. He swiftly exchanged his usual afternoon tea for a glass of illicitly brewed hooch, a bitter taste replacing the comforting warmth he had so enjoyed, symbolising the risk he was now willing to take. With the clatter of his Remington typewriter, the tool of his previous trade as a journalist, echoing in the background, he began to pen his audacious plan under the dim glow of a gas lamp.
As the cottony smoke of a hundred cigarettes swirled around him, Historia swayed atop the makeshift stage in a speakeasy hidden beneath a Chicago bakery, his fingers coaxing a sultry melody from his well-worn trumpet. His heart pounded in rhythm with the pulsating jazz notes, a daring soundtrack to the bold flapper fashion around him with their short bobbed haircuts and beaded dresses, the women dancing with reckless abandon as they flouted Prohibition law. But the sight that really tested his courage was the menacing figure of Al Capone, notorious gangster and bootlegger of the 1920s, glaring at him from a shadowy corner of the room, the glint of his diamond cufflinks catching the dim light.
As the clock struck midnight on December 5, 1933, marking the end of Prohibition, Historia raised a secret trapdoor, revealing a hidden speakeasy, filled with the euphoric cheer of flappers and dapper gentlemen. The revelers' sequined dresses and tailored three-piece suits shimmered in the glow of the ornate chandeliers as the air hummed with the intoxicating blend of jazz music and anticipation. Grinning, Historia placed a gleaming saxophone to his lips, an instrument that had brought him notoriety in the New Orleans jazz scene, and the room fell silent, all eyes on him as he delivered the performance of a lifetime.
