After months of searching, Ray finally unearthed a faded map marked with the symbol of the fallen Takeda clan, who were crushed at the Battle of Nagashino in 1575. With a heart pounding like the steady beat of a taiko drum, he donned his worn-out jinbaori over his threadbare kimono and secured his meticulously crafted katana, forged in the traditional manner by layering and folding steel a thousand times over, to his obi before setting off on his journey. As he departed, the aroma of freshly harvested rice from the nearby fields filled the air, a poignant reminder of the yearly stipend he once received as a samurai, now a distant memory since he became a ronin.
As dawn broke on the morning of April 21, 1603, the day of the Tokugawa shogunate's inauguration, Ray, dressed in his worn kimono, hastily consumed his meagre breakfast of pickled veggies and rice. His mind was not on his meal, instead consumed by the challenge ahead - a duel against the notorious samurai, Tsukahara Bokuden, the bane of ronin across Japan. Cradled in his hands was his trusty katana, its blade folded over a thousand times, glinting menacingly in the morning light, a testament to the blacksmith’s painstaking artistry and a symbol of the rogue warrior's silent pledge to courage and honour.
With a single, decisive stroke of his katana, painstakingly forged over two weeks with a thousand layers of steel, Ray cut down the final bandit menacing the village. The year was 1605, two years after the establishment of the Tokugawa shogunate, and these brigands, once samurais, had forsaken their bushido code of loyalty for a life of pillage. As he sheathed his blade, the scent of rice cooking over a nearby hearth filled the air, mingling with the earthy smell of worn cotton kimono robes worn by the villagers who now approached him, their grateful faces reflecting the flickering lantern light illuminating the village square.
