Purpose and preparation
The Easter Rising began on 24 April 1916. A proclamation states aspirations and claims; it is not proof that all those claims had already become reality.
Enquiry question: What can the 1916 Proclamation tell us about the Rising’s aims and limits?

A 60-minute lesson
Establish context — 10 minutes
Locate Dublin and establish the date using the National Archives research guide.
Examine the evidence — 15 minutes
Examine the Proclamation record and a teacher-selected extract from the National Library of Ireland. Identify issuer, audience and purpose.
Compare interpretations — 15 minutes
Compare the document’s claims with the archive guide’s account of events. Distinguish declared authority from practical control.
Write an answer — 15 minutes
Answer the enquiry question with one claim about aims and one limitation of the source.
Exit check — 5 minutes
State one additional perspective needed, such as that of a civilian affected by the fighting.
Support and extension
Provide a short glossary, readable extracts and a table headed “claim / evidence / limitation”. Allow spoken or written responses. Check image and document permissions before reproducing material; linking to an archive is not a licence to republish every item.
Extension: compare a contemporary document with a later commemoration. Avoid treating later independence as an immediate result or an outcome everyone foresaw.
Assess the accuracy of the answer, its use of evidence and its recognition of uncertainty, rather than confidence or performance alone. Optional homework is additional to the 60-minute lesson.
