What happened
Philip II sent the Armada against England in 1588. The campaign failed. Its plan required cooperation between the fleet and the Duke of Parma’s army in the Netherlands, not merely winning a single naval encounter. Three different meanings of success
An Armada that keeps its formation, an army that crosses the Channel and a government that retains control of England are three different hypothetical outcomes. Each needs its own explanation.
For this exercise, imagine that the fleet and army coordinate a crossing. That is the fictional departure, not evidence that occupation would inevitably follow.
The next obstacles
The invaders would still need supplies, secure positions and a political settlement. English resistance and disagreement within local communities would not disappear because a landing had succeeded.
A change in government might affect religious policy, but it would not automatically reverse the Reformation throughout Europe or erase Protestant belief. Claims about languages, colonial empires and industrialisation centuries later require many further assumptions.
Try the scenario
Write an imagined report describing the first week after a landing. State what the writer knows, what remains uncertain and whose cooperation is needed. Then offer two different political outcomes, with the conditions each would require.
